“If you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.”
– Groucho Marx
Today, just to be a little different, I photographed Rhubarb. I feel that it’s underappreciated most of the time – especially because there is a distinct lack of quotes about it on the internet! We grow a fair bit of Rhubarb in our garden and quite often when it’s ready – make it into rhubarb crumble or pie. I personally don’t like it so much because it’s quite sour and bitter. If you add lots of sugar to improve on this it kind of defeats the object about eating the Vegetable.
It is a vegetable – technically. Although I read that in the USA it’s considered to be a fruit. Baffling. It has been used for years and years particularly by the Chinese for medicinal purposes. The leaves are poisonous in their wild form but the stalks are readily used and consumed by many crazy people.
Rhubarb has grown in our garden for as long as I can remember. It’s also moved around the garden, I think because my parents relocated it – not because it moved alone! We used to have raspberry canes too – but we’re only really left with Rhubarb and Apples now.
So there we have it! Something a little different from the norm for Day One Hundred and Twelve but if I didn’t think outside of the box I definitely wouldn’t have got this far!
