“I can’t tell you how many pictures I’ve missed, ignored, trampled, or otherwise lost just ‘cause I’ve been so hell bent on getting the shot I think I want.”
– Joe Mcnally –

Joe Mcnally is a genius. Not because of the subject of his book – things we all know but rarely think about. But because he wrote the book.  I’ve not actually read it yet, although it’s one that I am desperate to get hold of one day. Instead I browse his quotes on a website when I’m seeking inspiration and I’m never disappointed. He writes “If You want something to look interesting…don’t light all of it.” And he is completely right.

The past few days I have come back from mini photography trips around the countryside feeling despondent at the lack of colour and imagination in my shots. I’ve set myself high standards and when I don’t achieve them for whatever reason – I’m annoyed. The past few days though I have played around a bit with selective colour and brought out characteristics in a shot that perhaps were overlooked before.

A street scene with a couple walking is nothing special – I’ll be the first to admit it. But without plucking the colour from the woman’s jacket and making it the focal point of this shot they would probably have both blended into the background even more. Now she looks interesting, alive – vibrant. They look like human beings – and the shot isn’t just a black and white one after all.

So today’s quote and indeed the title of the blog are both courtesy of Joe Mcnally and if you haven’t already I urge you to at least check out his quotes if not his book too – The Moment it Clicks. I shall be turning the ripe old age of Twenty Three in April and that is going to the top of my Birthday list – (hint hint Mother.) Finally – there can be no better end to a Saturday than to hang out of the upstairs window in favour of catching the beautiful sunset…

I also briefly passed Stonehenge on my travels today but we didn’t stop – so this was taken through the car window! I hope to do a blog focusing entirely on the place one day soon. This is just a rather blurry taster!

Last Night…I took some late night photos  which I didn’t blog about since I’d already fulfilled the daily quota. But I thought I would share them here now. I started the weekend off with a well earned soak in the huge bathtub that isn’t used nearly enough! I also couldn’t resist lighting a million candles and it looked so beautiful that I had to take a picture – this is how every Friday night should be spent…

Happy Weekend!
